BHS now enjoys our own 2-story building on the Sullivan Campus.  Please observe a brief highlight video of our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony below:

There are three phases to the Bonsall High School Facilities Plan.

Phase I:  Sharing a campus with Sullivan Middle School in semi-permanent portables.  This phase is now completed.

Phase II: Sharing a campus with SMS, primarily maintaining our learning environment in a new two-story building on the Southwest part of the Sullivan Campus.  This phase is scheduled from August 2016 until Phase III begins.

We are fortunate to have worked with Sprotte + Watson Architecture and Planning whose beautiful two-story building design encompasses our vision for collaborative learning environments.  They have been very supportive of our process to involve students and came by the school to share with BHS students the options for interior design, sharing important decision-making criteria for architects in construction materials.

Phase III:  Development and move off-site to a property located between the Golf Club of California and Fallbrook Golf Club.  The high school plan includes some shared community facilities and a gradual phase into a full facility as the community grows.  This plan proceeds despite the narrow failure of Measure DD to fund the development of a top flight high school in Bonsall. Initial meetings with architects have included generating some ideas about the instructional and programmatic needs of a high school.  While many decisions still require community input and further discussion, the following details are coming together:

  • The plans will not include a football stadium in keeping with maintaining property that fits into the local landscape.
  • The building project will protect environmentally sensitive areas where possible to maintain a sound and visual buffer to the local community.
  • The plans will leverage the natural slope of the property where possible and build several smaller buildings rather than require one large, flat footprint.
  • Community input determining how the outside of the buildings look as well as shape and design of the buildings is still developing and no final decisions have been made at this point in time.

Those who are interested in learning more about our planning and/or wish to participate in further community meetings should contact the Bonsall Unified School District office at (760)631-5200.

For phase III we have selected Baker Nowicki Design Studios (BNDS) of San Diego to serve as the architects of the off-site high school project. The team at BNDS has a depth of experience that is demonstrated in their thoughtful approach to collaborative design.  BNDS was selected for their ability to understand and reflect community ideas into a school plan that is customized to local school district needs and desires.  The team is personally invested in our success and takes tremendous pride in work that is locally appreciated.  It has been exciting to watch the way they work as a model for expert teaching and learning for our staff and students participating in the process as well.

Many thanks also to our local builders, Erickson-Hall Construction who not only understand our instructional needs, but are sensitive and courteous in their approach to building on a currently operating school campus. Their regular insistence on quality work has led to a beautiful building that is professionally executed.
